  • Our math classes are taught in regular and honors sequences. Placement into the honors college prep curriculum will be based on the citywide college prep admissions tests. Students not originally enrolled in honors classes can be placed in honors classes the following year if they are recommended by their math teachers. While we continue to teach basic math concepts and skills that have been a part of our curriculum for years, we recognize the need to be aware of the latest trends in math education and try to incorporate the effective ones.

Most students are programmed into Algebra I. If an eighth grader receives a high school credit in Algebra, he/she will be placed in Geometry next September. He/She should make sure that our Freshman Admissions Office receives notice about the grade and credit. Students learning Algebra in a program that does not award high school credit can take a test at Lane to determine if placement into Geometry is warranted.

After taking the core courses (Algebra, Geometry, Algebra-Trig), students have College Algebra with Geometry, College Math Prep, and Discrete Math as elective choices. We also offer AP Calculus for those students who complete College Algebra with Analytic Geometry. Our AP Statistics class can be taken after Algebra-Trig.

Students who need help will find that tutoring is available after school and on Saturdays. Excellent problem solvers are encouraged to join our Math Team.

We have a strong commitment to incorporating handheld technology in our classrooms. We would like all of our students to have a graphing calculator. Students are shown how to use them in our math classes. Additional help is offered to those who need it. The LSC provided funds for us to purchase calculators that students can rent for a school year so that those without the resources to buy their own can have access to them. All students are given an opportunity to rent these units as long as supplies last.
