Music

The Lane Tech Music Department is the biggest music program in Chicago! All students can participate in band, chorus or orchestra. Students can enroll as a beginner with no experience or be placed in higher level classes based on their ability and audition. Students attending Lane may choose Music as a major or choose a performing class as an elective. Students interested in music as a career should enroll as a Music Major. Students who have participated in the Music Major program have been accepted into many of the finest music colleges around the country! Some of the classes Lane offers are: Music Theory, A.P. Music theory, Chorus, Band, Orchestra, Guitar and Jazz Band. Don't hesitate to contact the Music Department if you have experience in singing or playing an instrument.

Beginning Band was developed for the student with little or no experience playing a band instrument. The Beginning Band student will learn to read music, perform on their instrument and participate in our spring concert. Instruments may be rented from the band program or outside sources. During their first year, the Beginning Band student will be prepared to move onto the next level if they choose to do so.

Suggested Prerequisites:
Due to limited availability of instruments, juniors and seniors are normally not eligible to take this class unless they already play a band instrument or own their own.

Beginning Guitar

Description:
There is a $100 class fee to be paid at Quick Start. This is an elective course for beginning guitarists with little or no experience on the instrument. Students MUST have a guitar at home to practice with. Guitars will be provided by Lane Tech during class time. Students will learn to read standard music notation, chord diagrams, and tablature. Students will also learn open chords, power chords, movable chords, single note (melody) playing, accompaniment techniques, and a variety of playing techniques and styles, including pickstyle and fingerstyle approaches to the guitar as well as develop correct sitting posture and appropriate hand positions. Students will learn to tune the guitar. The course also includes music fundamentals, theory, songs, performances, listening, improvising, and learning to read standard music notation as well as tablature. Students will be able to identify the parts of the guitar & demonstrate proper care and maintenance of the guitar. In addition, students will be encouraged to attend performances, as well as perform themselves.

Beginning Orchestra is a class for students who want to learn an orchestral stringed instrument. All students enrolled in this class will learn to play the violin, viola, cello, or string bass and will play in our Beginning Orchestra. Instruments may be rented from the orchestra program or outside sources. No previous experience required! Private lessons are not mandatory but highly recommended.

Due to limited instruments, incoming seniors must check the box to be put on the waiting list for this class. The accepted seniors will be notified once all programming is done.

Intermediate Orchestra I

Description:
Intermediate Orchestra is the second level string class after Beginning Orchestra. All students entering the Intermediate level should be able to play with correct playing position, both pizzicato and with the bow; be able to play one-octave scales up to 4 sharps and 2 flats; and be able to perform basic rhythms including quarter notes, eighth notes, and sixteenth notes, along with other beginning-level skills. The Intermediate Orchestra presents more challenges for the string student with higher levels of music literature and more advanced playing techniques. Incoming students not currently in the Lane Tech Orchestra who have experience playing a string instrument may be placed in Intermediate Orchestra pending an audition. Admittance into Intermediate Orchestra is pending instructor approval for all students. Private lessons are not mandatory but highly recommended.

Jazz Band is a small performing ensemble with a fixed number of spots available each year and is by audition only. All wind players must be enrolled in either concert band, symphonic band or varsity band. Students will engage with various genres of music, all filtered through the medium of the jazz big band. Music Theory I is a class taught on the college level although not an AP course. It is a course to help any student interested in studying the academic side of music for fun, or majoring in music in college, to learn how musical ideas are transcribed and turned into that which we call music. Students begin with the very elementary, as with the musical staff, moving into scales, intervals, transcribing, transposing, and ending with the arranging of a piece of well-known music for at least four instruments. They will learn to sight sing and sing in tune. This course is open to all students. Students who are interested in this class will gain a tremendous amount of knowledge and enjoy the class.

There is a $60 class fee to be paid at Quick Start. Sound Engineering students will learn to use all of the software and hardware in a professional recording studio. These students will also learn about the physics of sound through the study of acoustics and its effects on recordings as well as live music. Students will learn to record, mix, and master recordings of acoustic as well as electronic instruments. Students will be assigned projects in a lab studio setting that will capture performances of students, as well as professional musicians from the community, in order to produce professional quality recordings.

Varsity Band (Marching Band) is for the student with at least 1 year of experience playing in a band program. Varsity Band members act as our Marching Band during marching season and also march in parades and special events throughout the year. Varsity Band members must attend a 1 week marching camp at Lane during the summer and will be encouraged to audition for our Advanced Honors Band at the end of the year. This group was solely created to provide spirit and enthusiasm for all home athletic events. Varsity Band performs in Lane's Semi-Annual Concerts.
